In a recent NYTimes.com article, I read the following…
Many people intend to write reviews later but defect, Mr. Moorjani said, and mobile reviews solve that problem. He added that the most valuable reviews in terms of helping people make decisions are those that express the emotions felt in the moment.
The main theme of the article is how irate customers will immediately review a business on their mobile phone in the heat of the moment. This may sound a little scary for a local business owner, but…
I sense an opportunity here.
What if you were to become a technology evangelist, and proactively introduce Yelp to your iPhone-carrying customers? Do you think they would appreciate it? You bet they would. I love when someone shows me a new free app for my phone.
As I’ve said before, you can’t hide from Yelp and its sometimes negative reviews. So face your fears (if you have any) head-on by starting up a dialogue something like this…
YOU: I see you have an iPhone. How do you like it?
CUSTOMER: It’s great.
YOU: Have you seen the Yelp app?
CUSTOMER: No, what does it do?
YOU: It helps you find good local businesses by listing them with reviews from other customers.
CUSTOMER: That sounds cool.
YOU: If you have a minute, I’ll show you really quick how it works.
CUSTOMER: Thanks. That is so nice of you.
YOU: Let’s look up my business. See, it gives lots of information like hours, location, etc. Plus, see the reviews here? If you were not familiar with us, this would be helpful right?
CUSTOMER: Definitely!
YOU: If you click here, you can write a quick review of your own.
CUSTOMER: Great idea!
See how easy that was? Clearly, You can’t do this with everyone, but if you just found a couple of iPhone-toting happy customers per week when neither of you are too busy, your number of positive Yelp reviews will skyrocket. And you know what that means… MORE NEW CUSTOMERS!
Remember, you can’t ask for a positive review, but if you offer to show only happy pleasant customers this valuable “life management tool”, chances are most will be good.
Now, go get ‘em!
Cheering You On,
Anthony
